Mail exchanger (MX) resource record

Mail exchanger (MX) resource record is used to locate a mail server. ample, domain name is "myrootdns.com", mail server machine host name is mailserver.myrootdns.com" Now if the domain myrootdns.com receives mail for user@myrootdns.com, then the domain myrootdns.com looks in to it's MX records and delegates serving the mail to mailserver.myrootdns.com.


If multiple mail exchanger (MX) resource records exists, then myrootdns.com attempts to contact mail servers in the order of preference from lowest value (highest priority) to highest value (lowest priority).

The following shows creating MX exchange record,
1. Open dns manager snap-in using the command dnsmgmt.msc.
2. In console tree, browse to dns zone "myrootdns.com" and right click on it, select "New Mx (Mail Exchange) Record".

3. In the Mail Exchange Resource Record dialog, enter the host name of the mail server mailserver.myrootdns.com, click ok.
